During a Camp Perry shooting competition in 2019, team Black Coyote shooter David Wilson found himself in a losing battle with sun glare. In a spark of innovation, he blocked the sun by placing a sweat rag on the brim of his hat. That experience inspired the Black Coyote Sunshade, available now from White Oak Armament.
Intrigued by the idea of a sunshade that attaches to any baseball- or trucker-style hat, David spent many hours over the next year designing a prototype. At the next competition, friends and other shooters noticed the unique attachment and asked for one of their own. After 18 more months of perfecting the design, it is now ready for competition shooters everywhere.
Made of sturdy quilted fabric, the Black Coyote Sunshade features an opening that fits over a standard hat bill, with self-fastening straps to secure it around the back of the wearer’s head. Side flaps effectively block glare and peripheral distractions.
The Black Coyote Sunshade is designed to avoid interfering with ear muffs and other hearing protection gear. It slips on and off easily, and it is small enough to fold up and stow away when not needed. For dealer inquiries, email Dave@BlackCoyotes.com
This was the first time The Black Coyotes competed in the infamous NTIT match at Camp Perry; aka "The Rattle Battle". This is a historical and very intense team competition that involves a team of 6 shooters and two coaches beginning at the 600 yard line. Rapid fire strings are shot at 600, 500, 300, and 200 yard lines with the teams marching forward down the range as after each stage is completed. Scoring is simple hit or miss on a silhouette target, with points per hit decreasing as shooters move closer to the targets.
Let's just say it's an intense experience and USGI 30 round magazines aren't all they're cracked up to be. Trying to control your breathing and make accurate rapid fire shots, all while getting pelted by brass and trying to listen to the coach's wind calls over the noise of gunfire is a challenging and fun experience. I recommend all competitors try it at least once. Overall The Black Coyote Team did decent for our first time. Definitely learned a lot. Just don't ask Chuckles or A-Max what the rules are regarding ECIs between stages.
